Why HM shows the mac address of the switch port in LDDP port column?

I have all the edge switches with LLDP enabled and only with the HP ones I have this issue. I thought that it was a firmware bug but today I noticed that on the same switch, two AP170 behave different. One of them displays the interface name and the other displays the mac address of the port.

It only happens with HP switches. I have other Huawei edge switches, and all the AP connected to those switches shows the interface name.

All the AP is doing is reporting back whatever is returned via LLDP for the "Port ID" field.  This varies per manufacture unfortunately.

Aerohive switches return the physical switch port: Port ID(interface name): eth1/21
Brocade switches on the other hand return the MAC of the switchport only: 609c:9f53:1bb8(mac address)

I'm not sure exactly how HP responds to LLDP queries, but I'd imagine it could also vary depending on the code on the switch. But if you run a "show lldp nei" on one of the APs, you will see under the Port ID field, the same thing as what is displayed under the Eth0 LLDP Port # column.

that's odd. Two different AP170 with the same HiveOS release on the same switch. One shows the interface name and the other the mac address. This is the output from the command on each AP:

#sh lld nei
LLDP neighbor table: Total number = 1
--------------------------------
Incoming Port: eth0
Chassis ID(mac address): d07e:28e9:55d4
Port ID(mac address): d07e:28e9:55d7

That is indeed interesting.  One AP is reporting back the Port ID, while the other is returning the Port description (the GE1/0/2).

I see your reason for the question now.  And I do not have an answer for you.

Would be curious what Aerohive would say if you were to open a ticket with them.
