What is the difference between the 121 and 141?

I see the 141 has the exact same data sheet as the 121 with the exception of the external antennas. What is the threshold when to to install a 141 vs a 121? What is the benefit.

The difference between the two models is, as you have noted, that the AP141 utilises external antenna while the AP121 has integrated 4 dBi gain omni-directional 2.4 and 5 Ghz antennas (two of each). So the question really is why would you use external antenna over 4 dBi internal antennas?

The antenna types are important as omni-directional antenna create signal propagation with a donut style shape - the signal propagates wider than higher/lower. So omni-directional antennas are really useful when you are deploying indoors with a standard 2.3-3 metre high ceiling. If you are deploying in a warehouse with a 13 metre ceiling would an omni-directional antenna be a good choice? Semi-directional antenna, commonly called patch antennas, cause the signal to propagate in a much tighter pattern, which generally causes the client's perceived signal strength to be higher in the areas the semi-directional antenna are directing signal to.



The next consideration is the gain. The more gain the more the antenna type affects the signal propagation. For example, a higher gain omni-directional antenna will produce a wider, flatter signal propagation pattern than a lower gain omni-directional antenna. Gain is extremely important with semi-directional and highly directional antenna as generally the higher the gain the smaller the signal propagation width and height is and the further away a wireless client will be able to detect signal the signal. Highly directional antennas are generally used for long distance site to site transmission.

One of the least known wireless facts is that you can use gain to increase the coverage area of wireless clients. Commonly people increase the transmit power of their radios to try to increase coverage and this can cause issues for wireless clients, particularly low powered wireless clients, and the wireless client's performance (measured data rates) will be adversely affected. Sometimes you can increase the coverage area without the performance issues using a higher gain antenna. However, if you have integrated antennas you cannot change them to increase/decrease the gain as required.
