iPads are (I believe) all dual-band, and will prefer 5GHz when available. I recommend configuring for dual-band, your option 1.

Mike is right. HiveOS has band-steering & load balancing capabilities that will allow you to use both frequency bands for iPads. If you have to choose one, choose 5 GHz. But if you use Aerohive, you can choose both.

Thanks very much, as I use Aerohive, and as this is super easy to configure, I will continue to use both.

Apple uses some secret sauce to perform band-steering from the client side without the aid of the Aerohive band-steering capabilities. In most cases iOS and MacOS devices will migrate naturally to the cleaner 5 GHz band.

That being said, I still highly recommend that our customers take advantage of the Aerohive band-steering and load-balancing capabilities that can be configured in Radio Profiles. That way... all you non-Apple device users will also be happy!

I'm all about band-steering and load-balancing on our campus. Almost 50% of all our wireless users are on an Apple product and we have had zero, zip, none, nada, support calls regarding these devices and a connectivity issue.

The only issue I've experienced with band-steering is our _OLD_ Palm Pilots(I'm talking gen 1 here) that our bookstore uses for inventory would not connect to the access points with band-steering enabled on the radio profiles. I created a different SSID and radio profile that disabled band-steering for those Palm Pilots only on certain access points in the bookstore and they have worked fine since.
