VHM v.6.1r2 Update

Hi everyone,

my customer is running a VHM 6.1r1. After updating his APs with an image 6.1r2 he is not being able to configure his APs anymore. Configuration Upload is always rejected.
I have tested this in my environment and got the same results.
After updating my VHM to version 6.1r2a everything worked fine.
But the update process was a little complicated.
It didn't allowed me to download updates directly from the server, or update the manager from local folder. I tried several times and it didn't worked.
Finally I backup-ed my configuration, downloaded the new version image converted it to Hyper-V version (which my customer is using) and restored the old configuration. After that everything worked fine with AP.

The problem I have now is that I have to do the same with the customers VHM.
So I have the following questions:
- When I use the VHM in Hyper-V is there any other way of updating my VHM without doing the conversion all over again? Why can't I use normal update option?

-Do I always need the most up to date version of VHM when I update the APs OS and if not what is the work around for this configuration upload problem?

- It was said to me several times, that conversion to Hyper-V is not supported but after the conversion is done it is fully supported. So updates should work also or did I got this wrong?

I would also appreciate any other ideas and suggestions regarding this issue.

Thank you all and Best Regards,

Hi Slobodan,

I need to check if I understand you correctly. Your AP's are 6.1r2 and your Hivemanager is 6.1r1? If this is the case then it is logical it does not work. Hivemanager is fully backwards compatible, meaning a 6.1r2 can manage any previous version. However the Hivemanager always needs to have a higher version than the AP's.

Do I understand you correctly? If not, we'll need to look for something else. I have experience with using HM on Hyper-V so I am confident I can help you further.

Kind regards,

Stefan

Hi Slobodan,

Sorry for the delay, I'm looking at some options for upgrading your VHM in a less painful way then reconverting. I'm trying to doublecheck that with a co-worker who is in a foreign country at the moment. I expect to have more tomorrow and will update then.

Hi Slobodan,

I checked with my colleague, you can simply update an Aerohive HMVA by using the update option under: Administration > Hivemanager > Update Software. There's one big 'if' though. You have to have administration power over the 'Home' VHM.

For your other questions:

You always need to have a HiveOS lower than your Hivemanager version. If you get AP's with a higher HiveOS you can either downgrade them or upgrade your Hivemanager. Personally, I'd update the Hivemanager so I can have the latest bugfixes and features available.

Although it's possible to use Hyper-V after conversion and updates will work. I find that Hyper-V isn't the most stable platform for Hivemanager, and if it can be avoided it should be. I for instance have a customer running Hyper-V that has it fail occasionally causing him to have to image a backup. I also have a customer with no problems at all. Therefore, if you can avoid it do so.

Most importantly, updates will work when executed from the Hivemanager GUI. If not, let me know and I'll try to get back to you.

Best Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I didn't understood this: "There's one big 'if' though. You have to have administration power over the 'Home' VHM."
What exactly have you meant with that?
Does it have to do something with licensing and can I also update my trial version or not?

Thanks,

Slobodan

Hi Stefan,

I forwarded your suggestions to the customer and he tried to update his VHM but without success. He gets the same error message as I.
So can you please verify if this really works under Hyper-V.

Attached is the screen shoot of the error message.

Can you please help me with this ASAP because this customer is very important to us, he is about to order 60pcs of AP370 and additional 120pcs of the same model in following months.
First order is planed in several days so we need to react as fast es possible.

Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Kind Regards,

Slobodan

Hi Slobodan,

That's a very generic error, and one I haven't seen at that. I can confirm that we've had updates work the way I mentioned. But this is something that Aerohive support should look at. Do you buy Aerohive directly from Aerohive or from a distributor? If you buy Aerohive directly go to: https://support.aerohive.com/login and either login or create an account.

Otherwise call out to your distributor. This problem needs more attention and should be resolved quickly with the help of support.

Unfortunately I am currently in the middle of moving and have very limited time to dig in deep with the problem. It might be a difference in installation or hardware or maybe a problem with the image.

If you have the time and support resolves it, would you mind letting me know what the problem was?

Many thanks,

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

as promised here's the update on the subject.

I have finally succeeded to update the VHM. After testing several different images and after non of it worked even when I used WMVare, I finally found out that the available memory was the problem.
If you have less then 4GB of RAM available for VHM the updates will always fail.
With 4Gigs it worked perfectly.

Thanks for your time and trouble.

Regards,

Slobodan
