Hi Hans,

There isn't really a great complete wireless survey solution available. Lots of it comes down to personal preference, picking individual components that you like.

I therefore recommend that you put this question on Twitter, link to it back here, and I'll bring it to the attention of the WLAN Pros that hang out there to, hopefully, get you some constructive feedback.

On the software front...

I recommend Fluke's tools:

Ekahau are also awesome:

TamoSoft have some great tools:

MetaGeek have awesome troubleshooting tools:

Regards,

Nick

Nick is right that it comes down to personal preference and, unfortunately, when you get to the higher site survey requirements the applications are not available in fully functional trial versions.

My personal kit consists of:

  • Ekahau Site Survey Pro.
  • Ekahau Mobile Survey - an Android application that allows me to record what a tablet/smartphone experiences and, if required, import it into Site Survey Pro.
  • Metageek Wi-Spy/Chanalyzer - Spectrum analyzer that is compatible with Ekahau Site Survey Pro.
  • Fluke AirMagnet WiFi Analyzer - An advanced wireless packet analyzer.  I use this when a site survey result looks wrong and it is not an interference issue.  It is also an excellent post installation fault finding application.

Hi Hans,

Below is a good guide to build an initial site survey pack. I have then built mine out over time with additional antennas etc.

Has anybody here used VisiWave? It's an alternative to AirMagnet and Ekahau Site Survey.

Also highly recommend this battery for site surveys. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361317557430
It is incredibly portable and very lightweight. Unfortunately it is only 802.3af so will not power the AP1130 but if anyone have a .3at suggestion, that would be really useful.
