The primary factor that determines battery usage in 802.11 is the number of spatial streams that are supported. 80 MHz channels by themselves can be used by low-power devices. Many of the early 802.11ac phones, for example, supported 80 MHz channels while retaining the expected long battery life by using only a single spatial stream.
