From 2006-2013 Infonetcis reports that approximately 1.16 million controller units were shipped from hardware vendors and these vendors insist that this is the "right path" forward. The main idea here is that these units cannot account for future technology like 802.11ac and will have to be upgraded at some point. The question becomes "upgraded to what"? That is where you'll need to start to predict your future with a crystal ball. 3 years ago the idea that you wanted to make real-time decisions based on application and persona wasn't that prevalent. These concepts have deep impact on processing and obsolete many centralized BOXES that have already been shipped. So what is next? How big of a box do you get next?

Using a VMware based system is safer than buying a humongous box (controller for the future) and very likely cheaper too. The main point of that discussion is that the over-provisioning with a humongous box helps no one but the humongous box sales person who has quota to fill.
