The WAP porcessor is designed to handle all its functions for a specified number of clients (depends on the model you buy). This is typically 100+. The point of the distributed system is that as long as the APs are doing their job locally, the ENTIRE NETWORK scales without any bottlenecks in processing, traffic, etc. When you use a centralized box, you have to make sure that single box is good for what you have today and somehow PREDICT what that box will have to do in the future and purchase that humongous box up front (even if you don't fill it up for years!).
