Hi, Alan from AU again,
does AC require 802.3at (30W) to achieve best results?

Will 2nd gen AC require new hardware?

Hi Alan,

Regarding your first question, most upcoming 802.11ac access points will require more than 15.4 watts of power so you'll need switch ports with 802.3at capability to sufficiently power those access points.

For your second question, the hardware for 2nd gen 802.11ac hasn't even been designed yet. So it's impossible to tell what the power requirements are going to be. But the current trends are for access points and other devices to consume more and more power to drive multiple radios and multiple spatial streams.

My understanding is that if you enable 80 MHz channels the PoE requirements changes from 802.3af to 802.3at. Stay at 20 or 40 MHz channels and 802.3af PoE is adequate.
