Pinging the license server failed

Hi Everyone,

We are running Aerohive classic on-premises and have our own Hivemanager VM and several VPN gateways.

I have imported the license we purchased and this has successfully incremented in Hivemanger under VPN Gateway Virtual Appliances.  So far so good.

I then boot up the brand new VPN VA in ESXi and configure an IP.  It is at this point that it fails at "Pinging the license server:  Failed (License server is not alive)"

I can ping the new VPN VA and Hivemanager.  Both exist in the same subnet. 

I thought in the past they generally just show up in Hivemanager (possibly using the CAPWAP) and take one of the licenses.  Its as if it wants to go out to the cloud but this setup is all on-prem.  Does anyone have any ideas how the process is suppose to work?

Hi Oliver,

hmupdates.aerohive.com does not respond to ICMP so I think that is expected.

What version of the VA are you using?

Hello Oliver,
Have you tried the 6.5r2 ova? That is the most current ova on the 6.5 branch that I could find on the support site.

Hi Nick/Bill,

Its working now as the activation code had been sent to a different place to the license key.  It would be useful to see how the licensing process actually works as theirs very little explaining it in any detail.  I still can not get my head around why it would ping hmupdates.aerohive.com for an on-prem solution but i suppose that is trivial.  I suppose i could at some point use wireshark to see what it does :).
