Just a question about the typical range (distance) of an AP170 with standing omni directional antennas. The receiving client would be a standard laptop.
The catch is the AP170 would be mounted on a ship and received by smaller vessels at sea.
Looking forward to hearing from every bodies experiences.

Hi Jason,

I would recommend designing your network for 150 - 250 meters range.

We also have a directional antenna option for AP170.

(http://www.aerohive.com/products/acce...). The range on this one is up to 800 meters.

Hope this helps.

To be more specific... It takes two to tango.

If the laptop is zero gain client then the connection distance would indeed range as Shali implied if LOS conditions are met. However it is really important to understand what are you planning for.

It is not only the client (and receive&transmit abilities of the client) but also what kind of applications are you planning to use. The further out you go the slower data rate you get. Also, you can be sure that the AP is much better performer than your PC so they will not be the equal partners in the link.

Describe your project a bit more so we can help better.

Very true, the rx end is just as critical as the tx end. Video streaming is one of the requirements. Can you outline how quickly the throughput rate diminishes with distance for LoS conditions.
The client will be an ordinary laptop used inside the small vessel.
