Interoperate better with the LLDP implementation on HP, H3C and 3Com switches.

Switches running Comware (HP [not Procurve], H3C, 3Com) use LLDP in a slightly unusual way sending a MAC address in the Port ID TLV depending on how MED is configured.

The documented behaviour in such switches is:

"Port ID TLV

Carries the sending port. For devices that do not send MED TLVs, port ID TLVs carry sending port name. For devices that send MED TLVs, port ID TLVs carry the MAC addresses of the sending ports or bridge MAC addresses (if the MAC addresses of the sending ports are unavailable)."

In order to better interoperate with these switches, displaying the LLDP Port Description would show the meaningful port name which people expect (e.g. GigabitEthernet1/0/50).

Presently you see the following, which isn't particularly helpful:

Eth0 LLDP Sys-ID 0024:73c1:3040(mac address)
Eth0 LLDP Port # 0024:73c1:3072(mac address)
Eth0 LLDP Sys-Name as-jerwoods-01

Thanks Nick for the suggestion. Is HP still actively selling Comware switches? Or have they migrated to selling mostly Procurve lines now.

Wondering if this is is a short-term issue or something that we will run into longer term.

Hi Anoop,

As far as I know, HP purchased 3Com and H3C to get access to their higher end equipment (which the Procurve line did not cater to) and the common platform OS for routing and switching, Comware.

I am under the impression that the migration is actually the other way, towards Comware on all their switches, they are definitely still selling them.

For the moment, HP are maintaining and releasing new products that exclusively use either their traditional OS or Comware.

It would be nice if you would consider including the LLDP Port Description TLV to help those of us that use Comware based switching.

Thanks,

Nick

The following is an interesting take on where things are going in the Comware vs. Procurve space:
