Incorrect documentation on NetDump Configuration

In the document dated March 11, 2013 entitled "Enabling NetDump Collection" this line on page 2 is incorrect:

VLAN for reaching the TFTP server: If your TFTP server lies on a specific VLAN, enter that VLAN number in this field.

When I did this, netdump did not work; the APs could not reach the tftp server (this is clearly seen when I consoled into the test AP while issuing the _crash _kernel command).

To make it work, I entered the vlan of the AP, not of the tftp server, in the netdump update config window.

In my scenario, the APs are addressed in vlan 100 on a truck switchport and the tftp servers are in vlan 10 on an access switchport, and the native vlan of the trunk on which the AP is connected is 100. This config, following the documentation, did not work:

NetDumpTest#show boot-param
boot parameters:
Device IP:          10.1.100.180
Netmask:            255.255.255.0
TFTP Server IP:     10.1.10.50
Gateway IP:         10.1.100.1
VLAN ID:            10                   *********
Native-VLAN ID:     100
Netboot:            Disabled
Boot File:
Netdump:            Enabled
Netdump File:       35013020700176.netdump
Region Code:        FCC
Country Code:       840

On reboot:
In:    serial
Out:   serial
Err:   serial
Net:   eth0, eth1
Speed: 1000, full duplex
Using eth0 device
ping failed; host 10.1.10.50 is not alive
system crash last time, net dump RAM to tftpserver.
Speed: 1000, full duplex
set tftp_filename for put, to: /35013020700176.netdump.54a6f2ce.0.Using eth0 device
TFTP from server 10.1.10.50; our IP address is 10.1.100.180; sending through gateway 10.1.100.1
Filename '/35013020700176.netdump.54a6f2ce.0'.
Load address: 0x1004000
Loading: start tftp put.
ARP Retry count exceeded; starting again
dump RAM to tftpserver failed.

This does work:

etDumpTest#show boot-param
boot parameters:
Device IP:          10.1.100.180
Netmask:            255.255.255.0
TFTP Server IP:     10.1.10.50
Gateway IP:         10.1.100.1
VLAN ID:            100          ************* this is the only change
Native-VLAN ID:     100
Netboot:            Disabled
Boot File:
Netdump:            Enabled
Netdump File:       35013020700176.netdump
Region Code:        FCC
Country Code:       840

Did something change since this documentation was written?

Brent,

I do believe you have found a typographical error in that document. The Netdump configuration should be configured with the VLAN of the AP Management Interface if needed and not the VLAN of the TFTP Server. Thanks for pointing this out.

Thanks Brent for finding this error in our Aerohive Help system documentation. You are correct. The correct instructions for VLAN for reaching the TFTP server is "Enter the VLAN of the interface from which the device sends the netdump file to the TFTP server."

I have made the corrections in our Help files. The corrected instruction will appear after the Help file is rebuilt and posted.

Thanks again and best wishes for the new year. ----Joe Cardinali, Aerohive Technical Publications
