improvements to Bonjour Gateway

This may not be for everyone, but for me controlling what services are advertised by what devices is important. AH bonjour gateway handles this just fine. What is lacking is the ability to ignore advertisements that eat precious memory in the BGD especially if that device is an AP that may be used for other services. Currently the filter will deny the advertisements but it does nothing about the interface learning about a service and sticking it in the service table.

example
show bonjour service local
12   148  x.x.x.x     22    _sftp-ssh._tcp.                  Jenny thudd  MacPC-3333

I personally don't care about Jenny's service, so I think the BGD should be able ignore and remove this waste of memory space. Some people and organizations might want to see Jenny's service.

What I think would be useful is if you could choose the function of the BGD interface.

for example
vlan 10 has all Apple TVs then set it's virtual interface as learning only, it does not need to know about other advertisements

vlan 11 has all BJ capable printers then set it's virtual interface as learning only, it does not need to know about other advertisements

vlan 12 has users with their many devices, then set it's interface to advertise out only and not learn and insert user BJ services into the services table.

vlan 13 could be something that learns as well as receives advertisements from the other vlans.

the basic idea is to help limit the service table, and not overflow the memory.

since I have personally seen this behaviour in a AP330, and I know on rainy days I can have well over 1000 services in my list [kids can't go out and play], it would be great to have this ability to save resources.

I'd like to lend my support for more granular control and filtering of Bonjour services.

Andrew,
Thanks for the suggestion. We have been monitoring the various ideas and complaints posted here and elsewhere about our Bonjour Gateway, and I can assure you we have concrete plans to address the fundamental scalability issues at the root of most complaints. Those changes won't appear in the immediately upcoming 6.1r6 release, they are planned for the major software release that will follow later this year, but I think you will be pleased once you can play with it.

J. Goodnough,
We hear you. I hope that you too will be pleased once you see how we are changing this.
