Hivemanager NG: User Manager

We just got our 28 AP delivered. They are AP230 so i decided to start with HMNG as it is a new installation from scratch.

In old HMOL, which i had for trial, i could create a "User Manager Operator" for our receptionist. As we only have 1-3 guests a week ID manager is too expensive and user manager did a great job for us.

Where is User Manager in HMNG ? How can i create users without going into the policy ?

I do not believe User Manager is available in HM-NG. You have to use HM to get this feature or subscribe to ID Manager.

The reason for this is that User Manager is considered a legacy HM feature going forward. We have been told previously that no further development would take place on it.

Really ? What a disappointment..

Aerohive keeps praising it's unique PPSK feature which was one of the reasons we chose Aerohive over 3 other competitors. Having tried HMOL we evaluated that the user manager feature is exactly what we need and more then sufficient for us. IDM was thus not foreseen in our budget.

Now i am told that something called "Next Generation" lacks one of the most important features for us; simple management of named ppsk guests ... And the only solution is to subscribe to another paid service. Or of course stick with the old technology (HMOL) and don't be part of new development ...

I can't help, but as a new customer i feel a bit cheated to be honest :-( If user manager is dropped then IDM subscription should be included in HMNG subscription ....

HM is still being supported and developed in parallel to HM-NG

I suspect that at some point in the future that may change, but it is certainly not the case at the moment that HM isn't being developed.

You should be able to request that you are moved from HM-NG to HM.

Thank you Nick for all the info.

But would you, with a brand new install, start with HMOL knowing that some day it will probably be dropped and that you then have to do migration work ? And migration is not that simple. It's several steps and policies have to be recreated. And that only pushes the problem back for one or two years and is not a solution.

I see that we will be forced to buy IDM, or install a radius server with good web frontend and recognized certificate. Anyway it will be an unforeseen invest ...

That brings me to another question: Is IDM supported with HMNG ? In old HMOL that was that "portal" page where you can enter IDM or HMOL. How do we enter IDM web when using HMNG ? I would want a trial access to IDM to be sure it works before buying ...

Sorry, yes - my mistake in my first answer, ID Manager integration and some UM features are likely forthcoming for HM-NG.

The salient point to digest here is that HM-NG is an ongoing, iterative rewrite from scratch.

There are still therefore a significant set of things available in HM that are not in HM-NG. That's one of the reasons that both are still being developed in parallel. I think you may be jumping the gun here therefore.

People should only migrate to HM-NG if the features currently available match what's needed in the environment.

We have plans to address some of the use cases for User Manager in HM NG. This is part of a larger effort for migrating ID Manager and User Manager functionality into the NG platform. I think you will be pleased with the outcome.
