Hivemanager Classic on prem upgrade failure

We have a Hivemanager 32bit virtual appliance running 6.8r3 which I am trying to upgrade.

First of all I was having disk space issues but after increasing the hdd space and reinitialising the database I now have 24GB available.

When I try to do an upgrade either from the update server or a downloaded upgrade image it failes with a non descriptive failire: "An error occurred while executing the HiveManager software update command."
below is an screen shot of where it gets to in the upgrade process:

It doesn't matter what upgrade I try if it's the next incremental or the full leap to 8.1 it always fails. Reading the 8.1 documentation I should be able to go from 5.1r2 or later straight to 8.1

I have tried the following upgrades:
6.8r4
6.8r5
6.8r6
6.8r7
8.0r1
8.1r1
8.1r2

The virtual system is running on a VSphere enviroment with 5GB of RAM.

Has anyone got any suggestions?
