HiveBook: A fun and engaging way to learn about Aerohive technology

Our Tech Pubs team has come up with a clever and convenient way to give our customers documentation on Aerohive technology. It's called HiveBook: Aerohive Access Points, and it's now available through Apple iBooks Store and iTunes.

Joe's blog - excerpted and linked below - sums up the thinking behind the unique approach to education they used in publishing HiveBook. Have a read and then download a copy for yourself.

To paraphrase what I read out in the Twittersphere about HiveBook: Very cool!

Hi Andrew, I'm posting on behalf of Joe who said, "although I haven't confirmed this personally, an Apple representative told me that HiveBook is available on all 52 Apple iBooks Stores and iTunes stores throughout the world. If you can't find it in the Hong Kong store, please let me know."

Hi Amanda

If I follow the link for HiveBook on the blog, it says book is not available in Hong Kong iBook store, do I want to change stores. If I say yes then it says that my Apple ID does not work in the US store.

If I go direct to iBooks and search for HiveBook or Aerohive, it says no results. Should I be searching for something else?

Cheers
A

Joe looked into this and I'm sorry to say, but not the best news: Joe spoke with an Apple representative who explained that all iBooks, which are books written with iBooks Author and published through iTunes, are available in the 51 territories shown in the attached screen capture. When you look at it, you’ll see that unfortunately neither China nor Hong Kong appears in that list. He assured Joe that this is the case for all iBooks, not just Joe's.

I have to question the decision to make the eBook in an Apple only format (this is the company that "crippled" the wireless in their iOS devices) as:

* The Android market share is higher than iOS so Aerohive have limited the number of people who can access the eBook.

* If you are a wireless engineer and own a tablet you are much more likely to own an Android tablet due to the large number of wireless applications available with Android from inSSIDer right up to enterprise site survey applications, such as Ekahau's Mobile Survey.  The number of wireless applications available for wireless engineers under iOS is almost zero.

* The Apple Store requires you to enter credit card details and anybody involved in security is going to be reluctant to do so.

Seconded. I don't own Apple devices and don't intend to, so I'd be happy if the eBook (and future material) would be available for other platforms too.

HiveBook was made possible with the advancement of the iBook authoring tool made by Apple. We are using this as a prototype to explore the advancements of eBook publishing and are now in the process of figuring out how to create a similar experience using new generic platform tools. In the meantime, all of our other product documentation is available for all platforms.

The interactivity of HiveBook, which was created using iBooks Author, is only available as an iBook. There currently are no plans to publish it without those interactive features in another format because some of the content embedded in those features will be lost. Work on other forms of interactive documentation is still in development.
