Connecting Apple TV using an Aerohive Access Point

Hello HiveNation,

I am having difficulty connecting our Apple TVs on our new Aerohive Wireless Network. My room works fine but I am on my own network with my own router. When I go out into the other rooms the Apple TV is transmitting to the projector and it has an excellent signal on the WiFi but it will not download updates or set date and time over the network. Also when the Apple TV first comes on the only two options are Computer & Settings. I don't know much about Apple TVs but I think this is not a normal start up screen if already configured and connected to a network.

Even though the AirPlay setting on the devices is turned on I cannot see the Apple TVs on my iPad. The Apple TVs are not hardwired but are getting an excellent wireless signal. Both the Apple TVs and iPads are on the same gateway.

The Apple TVs are connected to the projector with an AVI adapter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would like to use several Apple TVs later this week.

Thanks in advance for your help.

they have not joined wifi network or don't have access to the internet

They need to join network and get IP then they will go out to the internet to a list of NTP servers that Apple Has configured.

make sure Apple TVs have joined the wifi network and have IPs, dns, Dg assigned via DHCP.

depending on your setup you may have to make sure you appleTVs have NAT setup on your firewalls.

Hello Andrew,
Thanks for this information. I know the Apple TV and iPad are seeing the same gateway, DNS & are getting their IP using the same DHCP.

I saw something about setting up a Bonjour Gateway. Do you know anything about it?

Thanks again,
Gene

Hi Gene

The aerohive APs will elect 1 AP as a bonjour gateway that must have an interface to all your vlans.

The David Coleman blogs explains it very well.

But your problem, seeing only 2 icons home and setup, indicates that the AppleTV can not reach the internet to get time settings[NTP]

so if you are getting internal IP info correctly, I would say it is

A. Firewall NAT issue
B. Firewall is blocking NTP from going out to the internet
or C. a combo of both.
