I received a AP230 from a webinar and would like to know if it is able to be moved to NG by deleting it from HMOL and then entering the serial # into my NG account?

Ensure the serial number is removed from your existing HMOL :-p

Thanks. Between the removal from HMOL and addition to NG, will the AP continue to function? It's currently on my home network and my wife works from home...

Steve,
There will be a service interruption. When you remove a device from HMOL's management, HMOL wipes the configuration off the device.

I had to test this to be sure.  You will need to reboot when HM-NG applies the new Network Policy to your AP so yes there will be a service disruption.

I tested this in two ways
  1. HM remove serial and default AP.  HM-NG add serial and apply network policy automatically.  This approach forced the AP to reboot twice.
  2. [My preferred approach]  HM remove serial but keep config on AP.  HM-NG add serial.  SSH to AP and apply the following config.  This approach forces AP to reboot once.
# CLI config #
no hivemanager
no capwap client vhm-name
no capwap client enable
capwap client enable
! wait about 5 mins and AP white light
! few mins later AP will auto reboot after HM-NG network policy applies successfully.

I'm writing a blog as we speak so I will paste it here later.

Thinking more about this, if you had 10 APs to move then perhaps approach 1 is the better approach :-p

Good luck.

Great post, very helpful. Got my AP230 moved over and running in ~10 minutes.

A couple issues:

1) The country code is set to UK and NG won't let me change it to Canada.

2) My entitlement key from HMOL gives me an error:
License Server Error: This entitlement key does not exist.

Hi Steve,

I assumed your existing HMOL entitlement key has not expired. Would you file a support ticket with your HMOL entitlement key info? We can look into the reason why it was not recognized by HMNG.

Thanks,
Fan
