Bonjour Gateway VM for existing customers

I would like to start running the Bonjour gateway for my network, and would like to use the VM that's available for the Free Bonjour Gateway. However in the FAQ it states that existing customers can't use it, they have to use an AP (which I would rather not do).

This seems rather strange to limit customers this way, so, I figured I would double check.

Can I download the VM and tie it to my existing HMOL account? (Or am I forced to have a separate account for the free bonjour gateway....or use an AP......)

Thanks!

Benjamin,
The Free Bonjour Gateway is a separate account for users who don't have Aerohive infrastructure and offers a simplified view to configure only the Bonjour Gateway entity. Currently, there's no way to tie that account with your production HMOL account. You can use a separate account though; the configuration is pretty similar to what you'd setup using an AP.
Why wouldn't you use the AP function if you already have them?

Based on how my infrastructure is set up physically I would have to locate a device in my MDF so it could see all the VLANs, which is why the VM would be nice.

Though, if I can combine the functions of the Bonjour Gateway and the VPN Server on a single AP330, this might not be too bad.

As a suggestion, it would be nice to offer the Bonjour Gateway virtual machine to existing customers. It seems strange to have to have a separate 'product' that's offered for free, but existing customers can't really utilize it in the same manner.

Benjamin,
We have a solution for you. Our CVG (Cloud VPN Gateway) is an official product designed for VPN termination but also runs our HiveOS code platform that includes the Bonjour Gateway functionality.
Starting from the 5.1r2 release, the Bonjour Gateway functionality is fully supported in the CVG product. I encourage you to contact your Aerohive Representative to try the CVG instance.

Regards
Emilio

Mark,
The Bonjour Gateway product discussed in this thread was discontinued several years ago and is no longer available. The Bonjour Gateway functionality within HiveOS has also been totally revamped since the comments on this thread, and no longer suffers from the memory and performance issues that plagued us back then. We have basically re-written it to no longer be a proxy service that listened, learned, and cached service advertisements and then re-advertised them onto other VLANs, to now be a stateless mDNS broadcast helper. Unless you have specified filters, all service advertisements learned on one VLAN will be forwarded to the other VLANs that HiveOS access points is connected to.

Sooo, with all that said, what are the recommendations for HM on-premises customers? The same as any other customer -- plug your Bonjour devices into the network, and then use them.

And the good news is that as of HiveOS 6.5r3, this stateless variant is available for all the APs.

Configuration is done in your network policy or Under Advanced Configuration Common Objects Bonjour Gateway Settings. You can view that status from the Monitor tab under Bonjour Gateway.
