Beginning Stages of Setting up VLANs with Aerohive and Untangle NG

Hello - I'm trying to wrap my head around how to setup a VLAN within Aerohive. As of right now we have a flat network, 10.2.x.x 255.255.248.0 .. 2 SSIDs (secure and guest) secure is password protected and guest has captive portal so devices do not just automatically connect when students walk into school.

I want to be able to separate the wired and wireless networks.. and even further separate Secure and the Guest networks using VLANs ... currently all ports on my aerohive switches are set to connect with 1,100vlans (100 is for our ipphones, 1 is native) my thought was to add another VLAN 13 & 14 to separate the wireless SSIDs from wired network...

ive tried to call in and get support but i feel like i cant figure out what they are asking me to do. or when i do it just doesnt work. Ive worked with untangle and i know how to setup the VLANS on that side but seem to get stuck at aerohive.......Anyone wanna help!? or can someone point me in the right direction? Right now everything is working but i would like to clean it up and use the system the way it should.

I'd be interested in replies to this, if that is possible.

Thanks!

When we had our WiFi separate from each building's VLAN, we did it by programming the switches that everything was plugged into. What we found though was that it made more sense to put each building's WiFi on the same VLAN as the wired side. This has made device discovery (like Apple TVs) much simpler, and has made printing easier to manage.

Makes sense to keep it on the same vlan .. I just would like a complete rundown on how to configure a vlan inside aerohive so I know I'm doing to right.. Most documents I've read are pretty general.

I agree with MikeW.  Each of our buildings are on a separate vlan, but wired and wireless are together.  But we are predominately wireless.  The only wired devices we use are phones, printers, cameras, and a few thin clients for things like custodians and kitchens.  It makes DHCP easier, as well as routing.  All devices are set to DHCP, we use reservations for fixed items like printers and security cameras.

Could that be a function of your bandwidth? We have AP120s and 121s which routinely attach 30-40 devices with great performance.

We don't usually see a slowdown until closer to 50. You might want to check your radio settings. We had set the APs in one building to try and force 5Ghz traffic. That meant a 2.4 device would take considerably longer to connect, and might keep getting bumped around once connected. The reason it had been put in place no longer existed, so we turned it off and things have been great ever since.

Hmmm we have all aerohive switches 10/100/1000 which connect to a 150/50 Comcast line .. Normally connecting 300 - 500 devices max at once.. Avg prob 8mbps download stream.. I'll have to look into it .. Thanks

What you will want to check is the Radio Profile associated with your Configuration Profile. You can check what profile an AP is using on the monitor page.

I'm glad to see other places are doing the same as we are maybe it's not such a bad thing ... I do see routing and discovery being a lot easier all being on the same vlan.. The main reason I wanted to do this was so I can use Untangles captive portal.. I've been receiving complaints about aerohives not loading or taking a while to load...we have a simple agree to the policy before connecting but that's it.
