band steering and PPSK issues

Hi,
I have tried a lot of things and I can't seem to get PPSK (dynamic PSK) to work right.

I have tried various VLAN, User profile, attribute, etc settings and the PPSK doesn't seem to work correctly.

Devices will not authenticate.

Also Band steering doesn't seem to be working as aggressively as it should. Clients are not getting aggressiveley placed on 5Ghz and it seems to still be prefering 2.4Ghz.

Have a look at this PPSK thread.  It may help.

In your 2.4 GHz radio profile what setting have you selected for the "Band Steering Mode":

The "strongest" setting is "Enforce 5 GHz band use" but note that as the 802.11 standard states that a valid connection attempt must be allowed if a wireless client attempts to associate on a 2.4 GHz radio and refuses to associate to the 5 GHz radio then the wireless client will be allowed to associate on the 2.4 GHz radio.

I have "enforce" set. I am working with support on this but I came here to see if anyone had any other tips on that.. Thanks for the response.

Also when I disable band steering PPSK works. Odd

Have you looked at what Client Monitor shows you?
http://blogs.aerohive.com/blog/the-wireless-lan-training-blog/troubleshooting-wi-fi-connectivity-wit...

Are you able to get a capture in monitor mode with two independent USB adapters on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels that are in use by the AP to look at what's going on in detail?

Yes and they fail with a driver error... that's when band steering and PPSK are both enabled... don't get that message at all with band steering disabled.... must be a bug.

What client(s) are you testing with?

A capture should give insight in to what's going wrong.

Remember that a significant part of band steering works by the AP refusing the association at 2.4 GHz for a while in an attempt to cajole it to attempt at 5 GHz.

What model of Edimax adapter? Is the driver up-to-date?

Samsung phones were known to be buggy with their older software releases and to fail to associate. Samsung did fix that, however.
