Attendance list creation based on MAC address

I got this asked on Twitter:

Basically automate the taking of attendance by assigning students to a MAC address. When an AP sees that MAC address come online in the morning, it could then mark that student as present for the day. Ideally, you could export a CSV or excel sheet from there showing who wasn't there.

I will pass this suggestion on to the Product Manager for our TeacherView and StudentManager apps. Thanks Bradley!

This, to me, seems to be a rather poor idea.

A MAC address authenticates a device not a user and they are trivially spoofed.
How would it work and scale where users have multiple devices? Or as they replace it / them?

You would be far better doing this, in my opinion, off a user's real identity, authenticated via their user name and password, either via an appropriate EAP type through 802.1X or a TLS protected captive portal.

Even then, the scheme is somewhat flawed in that you have no guarantee that the user is actually present when their credentials are presented and authenticated to actually confirm attendance.
