Protection isn't as big a deal with 802.11ac because the PHY header is identical to the OFDM header used in 802.11a. (In fact, 802.11ac dumps the 802.11n greenfield mode that was rarely used, making it even easier.)

The key things to be aware of with 802.11ac are how the frame dynamic bandwidth mechanism works, and what happens when you mix 802.11ac with older PHYs. Since you won a book, I can tell you to check out Tables 3-4 and 3-5 when it arrives.
