AP230's with "High collision" on Wifi0

I have deployed 5 AP230's in a two floor office environment.  All the AP's status on Wifi0 has "High collision" and sometimes plus "High tx error".  What can I do to reduce error and collision?  Please let me know if you need more info.  Thanks in advance.

Hi,

It would be interesting to know a little bit more about the environment. Could you tell us if this is a shared building? Are there other wifi networks within reach?

Could you provide some outputs please? I will take a look at the outputs and provide feedback which may help.

Thanks for your response.  The 5 AP's are in an office environment.  There are existing Extricom a/b/g access points in this office.  I want to replace them with Aerohives but I don't want to remove them yet as I am configuring/testing the Aerohives.  I have the SSH output files from the 5 AP230's.  How do I upload the five files?

I agree with both Nick and J. that the issues are most likely caused by the Extricom AP's. I was expecting to see the Extricom AP's in the show asp neighbor output. Do you use static channels or auto channel?

Gary, yes I know that I have to switch off the Extricom AP's but I can't now yet because I have to make sure that devices that are associated with the Extricom AP's have corresponding SSID's to connect to with the Aerohives.  Yes, I made the wifi0 channels static.  Is there a guarantee that if switch off the Extricom AP's that the collision will stop?  If they don't stop, what next?  This things are new to me because in the Extricom manager, I don't see such status!  And if there is such status, I am not aware of where to look at it in the ExManager.

Just for reference, I have added the details about how the status summary is reported. I do believe that removing the Extricom AP's will help reduce the collisions. It might be that there is also some other neighboring AP's that belong to another owner.

Out of interest, what client device do you use? It might be that we can have you run a program to give us the client perspective. Something like inSSIDer for example.

WiFi Status Summary

(This option is unavailable on Aerohive switches and VPN gateways.) HiveManager can generate a report that summarizes the status of the wireless interfaces for a selected device or devices. You can use this report to identify and correct issues such as overcrowded channels, high collision rates, and SNR (signal to noise ratio) problems.

To generate a WiFi Status Summary, from either the monitor or config view, first select the check box next to a device or devices for which you want a summary, then click Utilities > Status > WiFi Status Summary. For the selected device or devices, you will see information about the WiFi interfaces specifically, and about the device (referred to as station in the summary) in general.

There are five possible states for the WiFI interfaces:

Good: The CRC and Tx error rates are less than 5%, and channel utilization is less than 50%.

Fair: The CRC and Tx error rates are less than 10%, and channel utilization is less than 65%.

Channel RF Overcrowded: The channel utilization rate is 65% or greater.

High Collision: The CRC error rate is 10% or greater.

High Tx Error: The transmit error ration is more than 10%, which can occur when the RF environment is overcrowded and the collision rate is high.

  • In some cases, the interface will meet the requirements for both Channel RF Overcrowded and High Collision. In these cases, both states are listed in the report.
There are four states for the station. The station must meet all required conditions to be identified as being in one of these four states:

Good: SNR must be greater than 20 dB. The Tx retry ratio is less than 5%.

Fair: SNR is less than 20 dB, but greater than 15 dB. The Tx retry ratio is less than 10%.

Poor: The SNR is less than 15 dB.

High Retries: The Tx ratio is greater than 10%

Your Aerohive APs and Extricom APs are almost certainly walking on each other.

You ideally do need to get your Extricom APs switched off...
