ap121 "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)" while trying to boot on multiple devices.

Updated ap121 to 6.1r3b and received "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)" while trying to boot on multiple devices. Do I need to RMA these devices or are there instructions to revive these aps.

Assuming the flash memory is working, these should be recoverable via the bootloader with a TFTP server such as TFTPD32.

You will need to have a local copy of the 6.1r3b firmware to reload the devices with.
If you do not have this, it can be downloaded from Aerohive's support website here:

I am curious how this has happened. Were the access points in question power cycled while they were updating? It does take a relatively long time to complete.
