Why aren't my iOS devices seeing rebroadcasts?

I have an AppleTV in VLAN16, a Mac in VLAN7, and an iPhone & iPad in VLAN18. BG set to share between 7, 16, & 18.

iTunes on the Mac can see and play to the AppleTV (using the BG rebroadcast).

The iPhone & iPad do not see the AppleTV at all.

Any idea why iOS devices would not see the rebroadcasts?

Dumb question, but I got tripped up on something similar. Are Apple TV and Mac connected wired or wireless? What kind of device is doing the routing?

AppleTV via wire. Mac via wire.

HP Procurve 5300xl L3 switch doing routing.

Wifi to phone provided by Aruba AP.

This one has me stumped.

Dave,
I am sorry that I am not terribly familiar with the troubleshooting tools offered by Aruba, do you have any way to confirm or deny whether the service advertisements re-broadcast by our Bonjour Gateway are actually arriving at that Aruba AP?

Alternatively, if you move the Macintosh from a wired connection to using the same SSID as the iPhone and iPad, does *it* see the Apple TV advertisements?

I don't *think* your HP Procurve is an issue, because it appears to be forwarding the traffic just fine between the VLANs.

New test:

MacBook connected to same wireless signal as iPad (VLAN18).

AppleTV connected to VLAN16 (tested via wired & wifi connection).

Macbook can airplay to AppleTV via iTunes.

iPad sees *only* devices advertised in its own VLAN. Does not show devices that BG is rebroadcasting.

iPad is jailbroken (though I tested and got same results before jailbreaking). Is there an AppStore or Cydia equivalent to Bonjour Browser that I can use on iOS to see raw advertisements?

I'm perplexed on this one as well.

Hmmm. Dave, you've exhausted my ability to help. If the MacBook on the same SSID can see and use the Apple TV then you've confirmed that all of your infrastructure equipment is properly configured. It's down to the problem end-systems themselves. Sorry, but I think I'll have to refer you to the jailbreak community or Apple themselves for further assistance.

Thanks.

Do we know if Apple considers Bonjour Gateway to be a supported configuration? Ie, will Apple support stop talking to me as soon as I mention Bonjour Gateway?

I don't know for sure. It's probably something I'd call your local Apple SE about rather than general support.

We did extensive testing of the Bonjour Gateway solution and found some serious issues when using iOS devices (iPads, iPhones and iPods). After seeing the responses from Matthew Gast to a number of questions we are waiting for the immenent release of the 5.1r5 firmware, which apparently has some code to resolve some of the issues.

We have just finished upgrading to 5.1r5 and will be testing the Bonjour Gateway with iOS devices tomorrow morning. I'll post what our results are for those that are interested.

We are having the same issue. From my testing the issue is only with devices updated to ios 6.1, all other ipads are working fine with airpaly accross vlans. All ipads updated to 6.1 work with airplay on the same vlan but not when crossing vlans via Bonjour Gateway.

Just a guess (and partially based on testing and Rob's detection of iOS 6.1 as culprit) - I think issue is due to IPv6. Using Bonjour Browser on iOS, the native Airplay announcements have IPv6 info, the Bonjour Gateway rebroadcasted announcements only have IPv4. (Which should be good as we only route IPv4, but iOS doesn't seem to like it.)

We have started testing the Bonjour Gateway using the new 5.1r5 code and so far we have the same issues with printing - third party apps can detect the network printers but Safari can't.

Once we have completed the testing of printing via Bonjour we will move onto the Apple TV.

Hi guys,
There is a known problem with Bonjour Gateway broadcasts when trying to AirPrint or AirPlay from IOS devices (is ok under Mac OS X).
http://community.aerohive.com/aerohiv...

The fix is in the 5.1r5 release.

I have no idea why your 3rd party apps would detect it but not Safari though.

Thanks for the update.

I am engaged the local Aerohive support engineer and he is going to look into it. Once we have a resolution I will post it up.

5.1r5 seems to (so far) only be for those running their own on-site cloud manager - and not for those of us running the free virtual appliance. Is that correct?

Crowdie- How is your Airplay on iOS 6.1 devices now that you upgraded to 5.1.r1? I see that your still having Airprint problems but does Airplay work?

Are you folks trying to print to true "AirPrint" capable printers? Or are you utilizing something like the xPrintServer from Lantronix?

5.1r5 is now available for customers with HiveManager Virtual Appliance.

5.1r5 is not yet available for HMOL.

It can be downloaded in the usual place. Below is a URL but you will need your username and password to access this URL. Some may need to contact their service provider to access the URL.

After a large amount of testing with the 5.1r5 firmware on a virtual appliance and AP330 access points we were successful in communicating with an Apple TV but the issue of not being able to print from Safari on iPads running iOS 6.1 remains.

Hello Dave,

Yes - If you are on 5.1r5 and you navigate to:

Monitor > Update > Upload and Activate HiveOS > Add/Remove > select radio-button for "HiveOS 5.1r5 images from update server" > [Upload]

This should update your system with all the 5.1r5 HiveOS software.

Scott,

Am I missing something? The instructions you provide lead me to the situation included in my last screen shot. In that drop-down, the ONLY available software is 5.1r2.

(I click Monitor, Devices, Bonjour Gateways, select my appliance, click Update, click Upload and Activate HiveOS software.)

Thanks.

I have no idea what happened but my Airplay is working again with iOS 6.1 devices. The only thing that changed in our 5.1.r4 HM is something a level 2 aerohive tech did to speed up our VM hivemanager. He SSH in and changed a few settings and now Airplay works again.

For Bonjour issues in general, a known work-around is to restart the Bonjour service on the AP once a day via the commands:

"no bonjour-gateway enable"

then...

"bonjour-gateway enable"

This seems to help a lot.

is only one AP the bonjour gateway or are they all gateways and this command would have to be done on all APs?
