I just received and installed an Aerohive SR2124P switch.  I have installed a 10G SFP+ SR optic into the machine, and the media and type are showing "unknown" for the optic. Is this normal for the 10G optics to show this way?

Did you install an Aerohive module, or another brand?

If another brand, it's possible the GBIX is at fault.    I have used both Aerohive and HP modules both 1gb and 10gbe SFP+ SR with no issues -- literally just plug it in.

You are correct on the maker of the AH module.
Where are you seeing your version showing as "unknown"?

Since I have both HP 1Gbe and AH10Gbe, and they work as intended,  I'll can be sure I'm looking in the same location you are and see what mine happen to show.

...you've got me curious now...

Bryan-

I have a attached a screen shot.  The first port is an Original Aerohive SFP SX, and the second port is a 3rd party SFP+ SR.  I have highlighted where the media type indicates 1000BASE-SX for the SFP SX, and "unknown" for the 3rd party SFP+ SR.  Take a look, and let me know if you think an Aerohive Original SFP+ SR would show something different other then "unknown".

I had one on my bench, and I also (borrowed) some non-AH vendor modules....

To your original questions.... ONLY the AH SPF+  I used shows "unknown" in type.

I tested with HP, Infosair and Dlink.  They all populated that field as expected.

My impression then is that the AH module either doesn't have it coded in its firmware, or maybe it's blank...OR...and I might lean this way more --- the SWITCH doesn't have the AH signature in its table and there's nothing to insert that matches.   Just guessing, but as you said, it's working as expected and perhaps is just more information for the human side than actual facts.

Very interesting.

I am working on getting and AH Original SFP+ SR, when I receive it and test it, I will post the results.  I am very interested in seeing if there are any differences.

Thanks again for your input!

My model AH - AH-ACC-SFP-10G-SR
(breaking out microscope to read label) SPP-10E-SR-CDFD

It was, as I noted, the only one that didn't show expected "type" but "unknown" instead.  I think if you get yours and it does show, then there was a firmware change on the module.

Lacking impact in production, I have 133 AP's across 3 flavors [2124/2148/2024] (2024 doesn't support 10Gbe)   It would be interesting to see what your end results are.

Good Luck!
